Dehradun, August 12, 2026: Uttaranchal University celebrated National Librarians’ Day 2026 to commemorate the 134th birth anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science in India. The celebration highlighted the role of libraries in supporting education, research, digital learning and integrity.
The programme was graced by Hon’ble President Shri Jitender Joshi, Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Dharam Buddhi and Pro Vice Chancellor Dr. Rajesh Bahuguna with Deans, Directors, Principals, faculty members, research scholars, students and library professionals.
The event highlighted the relevance of Dr. Ranganathan’s principles and the changing role of librarians as knowledge facilitators, research partners, digital navigators and promoters of integrity. The University reaffirmed its commitment to developing the Central Library as an inclusive, technology-enabled knowledge hub.
Hon’ble President Shri Jitender Joshi called upon the gathering to remember Shri N.C. Uniyal, the University’s first University Librarian, for his dedicated service.
A major highlight was the launch of “Samavesh – Inclusive Library Support Initiative”, comprising four free Book Bank schemes: Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Inclusive Library Support, Gaura Devi Tribal Knowledge Empowerment, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Educational Advancement Support, and Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Knowledge Access. The initiative aims to provide equitable access to academic books for disadvantaged students, supporting NEP 2020 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Best Library User Awards were presented to 22 students, with one female and one male student from each constituent college, along with faculty members for exemplary use of library resources and contribution to research.
The programme was moderated by Ms. Nidhi Sharma, Assistant Professor, UCHS. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Rakhi Sharma. The event was coordinated by Arun Singh Thakur, University Librarian, with academic leaders and library staff.
The celebration concluded with a reaffirmation that a library is a centre for knowledge, learning, research and transformation.
