The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Uttaranchal Institute of Technology, Uttaranchal University, successfully organized a highly insightful one-day workshop titled "Green Energy Solutions for Recovery of Lithium and Transition Metals" on 11th November 2025.
Led by Prof. (Dr.) Jaspreet Hira, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the workshop addressed the pressing need for sustainable and eco-friendly techniques to recover critical minerals vital for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage systems. Prof. Hira delivered an engaging session on “Bioleaching”– A Revolutionary Green Approach, demonstrating how microbial consortia can efficiently extract up to 95% of lithium and cobalt from e-waste and spent batteries, while reducing energy consumption by 40% compared to conventional smelting processes.
The event was graced by the honorable presence of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Dharam Buddhi, who inaugurated the workshop and motivated participants to contribute towards sustainable technological advancements. Prof. (Dr.) Sumit Chaudhary, Director – Uttaranchal Institute of Technology, along with senior faculty members and enthusiastic students, actively participated in the technical discussions and hands-on segments.
The workshop was highly appreciated for bridging academic learning with real-world solutions in the circular economy and green energy domain. It further reinforced Uttaranchal University’s commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability in engineering education.
