A site visit was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, Uttaranchal Institute of Technology (UIT), at construction site of Dev Bhoomi Constructions to provide second and third-year Civil Engineering students with practical exposure to real-time construction activities. The focus of the visit was on the layout raft foundation, retaining wall, shuttering work and understanding the Bar Bending Schedule (BBS). The visit was organized under the supervision of Mr. Gaurav Thakur, Head of the Civil Engineering Department and Mr. Vinod Balmiki, Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering Department.
The site visit commenced with an inspirational address by Prof. (Dr.) Sumit Chaudhary, Director of UIT, who motivated the students and extended his wishes for their successful exploration of the construction site. Site Engineer Mr. Dev guided the students through a highly informative and engaging session.
Students observed raft foundation work, including reinforcement layout, waterproofing, and concrete pouring. They learned how raft foundations distribute structural loads on weak soil. The visit also covered shuttering using steel and plywood formwork, along with support and de-shuttering methods. Site engineers explained the preparation and interpretation of the BBS, highlighting bar markings, lengths, and cover. Safety measures like helmets, jackets, and site rules were also demonstrated.
Overall, the visit offered valuable practical insights that reinforced the students' classroom learning and improved their understanding of construction techniques.
