Workshop on “Sustainable Smart Waste Management for Smart City”

Uttaranchal School of Computing Sciences, Uttaranchal University organized the national workshop on Sustainable Smart Waste Management for Smart City (Hybrid mode), on 01 April 2024 with the aim to showcase innovative technologies and smart solutions for waste management to enhance efficiency, minimize environmental impact, and optimize resource usage. 

The inaugural ceremony witnessed the presence of Shri Jitender Joshi, Chancellor Uttaranchal University, Dr Kalachand Sain, Director Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology as a Chief Guest, Dr R P Singh, Director IIRS as a Guest of Honour, Prof (Dr) Dharam Buddhi, Vice-Chancellor, Uttaranchal University and Expert Speakers like Dr Arijit Roy, Scientist SG & Head Indian IIRS, Dr Abhishek Mathur ,Scientist & Fermentation Specialist, Prof (Dr) Sonal Sharma Dean, USCS, Dr Sameer Dev Sharma, HoD, USCS. 

Prof (Dr) Sonal Sharma extended a warm welcome to all dignitaries. She stressed the importance of promoting sustainable waste management practices to foster cleaner and healthier cities within the framework of smart city development. Prof (Dr) Dharam Buddhi highlighted the role of integrating technology and sustainable practices to enhance waste management processes. 

Dr R P Singh discussed policy frameworks and governance models essential for supporting sustainable waste management in smart cities, emphasizing public-private partnerships and community engagement strategies. 

Dr Kalachand Sain elaborated on the 5 Rs –Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse and Repurpose. He underscored the significance of early warning systems and data-driven approaches in enhancing preparedness to seismic events.  

Dr Arijit Roy discussed the Digital twin approach within smart city and IoT sensor network for monitoring and optimization. More than 800 participants attended the workshop in hybrid mode from all the states. 

Dr Sameer Dev Sharma extended his gratitude to all the attendees, speakers, and organizers for their contributions to the workshop’s success with the support of Dr Meera Sharma, Mr Abhishek Pathak, Ms Manisha Saini, Ms Manisha Khanduja, Ms Divya Rawat and Mr Harshit Gupta.
