Uttaranchal Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Uttaranchal University, organized an Herbal Garden visit to the Botanical Survey of India (BSI), Dehradun, for the students of B. Pharm 3rd year on 25th February 2026 to provide practical exposure to medicinal plants and their significance in pharmaceutical sciences. During the visit, students explored the herbal garden and observed a wide variety of medicinal plant species, their botanical characteristics, therapeutic uses, and conservation practices.
Upon arrival, the students were warmly welcomed by the scientific staff of BSI, who provided an introductory session highlighting the role of the Botanical Survey of India in plant exploration, documentation, conservation, and research activities across the country. The introductory session was conducted by Dr. Sushil Kumar Singh, Scientist F and Head of the Northern Regional Centre, Dehradun, who explained the institutional activities and the importance of medicinal plant research.
The students were then guided through the Herbal Garden, Museum, and Herbarium sections by Aashutosh Maheshwari, Field Assistant, and Harsha Soni, Botanical Assistant, NRC Dehradun, where they observed a wide variety of medicinal and aromatic plants, including rare and endangered species. The experts explained the morphological characteristics, botanical nomenclature, therapeutic uses, and conservation practices of important medicinal plants, helping students connect theoretical knowledge with real-world applications. The visit also included demonstrations on herbarium preparation techniques, plant specimen preservation, and methods used for authenticating crude drugs.
The visit was highly informative and enriched the students’ academic knowledge through practical experience.
