Law College Dehradun, Uttaranchal University organized an insightful workshop on “Trademark Law and Its Protection in India,” conducted by Ms. Apoorva Shukla, Assistant Professor of Law on 10 October 2025. The session provided an engaging overview of the fundamentals and practical aspects of trademark protection under the Trademarks Act, 1999.
Ms. Shukla began by explaining the concept and importance of trademarks in preserving brand identity and consumer trust. She elaborated on the types of trademarks recognized in India, including word marks, device marks, and certification marks. The seminar highlighted India’s alignment with international frameworks such as the Paris Convention, TRIPS Agreement, and Madrid Protocol, emphasizing the global relevance of trademark protection. She also detailed the procedural aspects of registration—application, examination, opposition, and renewal—along with remedies available for infringement and passing off. Citing landmark cases like Yahoo! Inc. v. Akash Arora and Coca-Cola v. Bisleri, she demonstrated how courts have shaped modern trademark jurisprudence. The seminar concluded with an interactive discussion, encouraging students to reflect on the role of trademarks in promoting fair competition and protecting innovation in global commerce.
