Law College Dehradun celebrated Himalayan Day on 9 September 2024, by organising a seminar on the topic ‘Himalayan Conservation for Sustainable Development’. The event commenced with the felicitation of guests Dr Pradeep Mehta, Head United Nations Development Program, and  Dr Abhishikta Ghosh, Superintending Anthropologist, followed by a lamp lighting ceremony.  

Prof (Dr) Rajesh Bahuguna, Pro Vice- Chancellor in his address extended his wishes for the day and asserted protection of the Himalayas with the adageहिमालय है हरा तो सुरक्षित है धरा raised concern regarding rapid development, unplanned activities, ignorance of habitat in the Himalayan region because of which Himalaya is losing its identity. He also said that conservation of the Himalayas is a concern of this generation das a student of law one must be aware about sustainability.  

Dr Abhishikta Ghosh spoke at length by explaining how Himalayas were formed, on the Africa model and explained genetic adaptation to high altitude. She explained importance of medicinal plants found in the Himalayan region. These medicinal plants are used for the purpose of curing any disease of the tribes living in the Himalayan region    

Dr Pradeep Mehta explained importance of Himalayan day and how these mountains are the pillars as they protect the foothills from flood. He also said we are fortunate to witness Himalaya and further raised concern over the low rate of the natural resources protection with an illustration- In the hilly areas a person has to walk 5 kilometres for water and in foothills people are wasting 28 buckets of water in their bathtub at last he wishes everyone all the best for their future.  

Dr Lakshmi Priya Vinjamuri, Chairperson of VTGS said that development services shall focus on ecosystem and reiterated the significance of medicinal plants, asserting that theoretical knowledge must be grounded in practical understanding.
