Better sewage treatment is critical for human health and ecosystems – to understand this issue up close, the students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Uttaranchal Institute of Technology, Uttaranchal University visited the University’s Sewage Treatment Plant on 2 November 2023. This field visit provided students with valuable insight into the workings of a vital component of the city’s infrastructure.
Guided by the experts at the plant, the students witnessed the multifaceted processes involved in treating sewage and ensuring the safety and sanitation of the University campus water bodies. The field visit was planned exclusively to help the students understand the need of proper management of the sewage to ensure health and prevention of diseases. The visit began with briefing the overall working process and the stages of the sewage treatment plant by Ms. Sapna Bisht, Assistant Professor, Uttaranchal University, Dehradun.
After the briefing, the students were given a comprehensive tour of the entire plant, where they had the opportunity to observe the actual process of sewage treatment. They were able to understand the initial steps of identifying and removing of large debris, followed by the primary treatment phase where solid matter was separated from the liquid. The subsequent secondary and tertiary treatment stages were also explained, highlighting the crucial role of beneficial bacteria and advanced filtration methods in treating the water to acceptable standards.
Prof (Dr) S D Pandey, Dean UIT (Uttaranchal Institute of Technology) appreciated the members of the faculty for executing the visit and said that such visits provide students an insight into the complex systems involved in maintaining clean and safe water resources.
Prof (Dr) S S Sehgal, Vice President, Uttaranchal University, and Prof (Dr) Dharam Buddhi Vice- Chancellor, Uttaranchal University graced the event with their benign presence.
The visit was held under the supervision of HoD Mechanical Engineering, Dr Sanjeev Kumar Joshi along with faculty members Dr Avnish Kumar, Dr Ruby Pant, Mr Vivek John & Mr Saurabh Aggarwal, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering were also present during the visit.
