On December 27, 2022, the National Institute of Social Defence, New Delhi, under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, in collaboration with the School of Journalism and Mass Communication of Uttaranchal University, Dehradun, organized a conference on the topic Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2019. The purpose of the seminar where on the one hand L.G.B.T.Q. Students were to be made aware about the law and rights related to transgender, while on the other hand there was also an attempt to connect the transgender community with the mainstream.
Uttarakhand’s first female transgender and social worker Ms. Aditi Sharma graced the program as the chief guest. Sharing the bitter experiences of her life, Ms. Aditi Sharma said that the circumstances and difficulties she faced as a transgender to carve out a niche for herself in the society was not easy. Speaking on social justice and empowerment, Mr. Sanjay Panwar, Advisor, NISD in the program stressed the need to end discrimination against the transgender community.
The main attraction of the program was the play “Pehchan” presented by the theatre club Abhivyakti of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Uttaranchal University.
Chancellor of the University Mr. Jitendra Joshi, University Vice-President Dr. Satbir Singh Sehgal, Vice-Chancellor Prof.(Dr.) Dharam Budhi, Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna, Prof. (Dr.) V. Lakshmi Priya and Head Cultural Committee Dr. Bharti Ramola were present as special guests in the programme. Director, USJMC Dr. Jitendra Kumar Sinha felicitated all the dignitaries.
