The School of Applied & Life Sciences (SALS), Uttaranchal University, Dehradun, organized an educational and industrial visit to the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun, on 10 August 2026. The visit was organized by the 2∞ & Beyond Club for students of Mathematics and Data Science, accompanied by faculty members Ms. Shivangi Baghel and Ms. Ankita Chanyal.
The visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure to geospatial data, Remote Sensing, GIS, scientific data analysis, and geological research. It was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical classroom learning and real-world applications, particularly demonstrating how mathematical and computational techniques can be applied in earth sciences and environmental studies.
A major highlight was an informative lecture delivered by Mr. Naveen Chandra, Scientist, who holds an M.Tech. from IIT Bombay and a Ph.D. from IIT Roorkee. The session focused on geospatial data collection, Remote Sensing, scientific data handling, and data analysis. Students learned about the importance of data quality, systematic collection, processing, interpretation, and the application of geospatial information in geological and environmental research. The interactive session also encouraged students to understand interdisciplinary career and research opportunities.
The students also visited the museum, where they observed geological specimens, historical materials, Himalayan debris, and other artifacts. This provided them with a visual and practical understanding of the geological heritage and significance of the Himalayan region.
The visit enhanced students’ understanding of Geospatial Data, Remote Sensing, GIS, scientific data interpretation, and Himalayan geology. It also highlighted the interdisciplinary relationship between Mathematics, Data Science, Geology, and Environmental Studies.
Overall, the visit was informative, interactive, and academically enriching, promoting experiential learning, scientific curiosity, interdisciplinary thinking, and professional awareness among students.
