The School of Agriculture, Uttaranchal University, organised a five-day workshop on “Evaluation of Cadmium Accumulation in Soil and Water: Risks to Plants and Food Safety” from 2nd to 6th February 2026. The workshop aimed to enhance students’ understanding of heavy metal contamination in agricultural ecosystems and its implications for crop productivity and food safety.

The programme commenced with an Inaugural Address by Prof. (Dr.) Sharad Pandey, Director, School of Agriculture, who highlighted the significance of monitoring heavy metals in soil and water for sustainable agriculture and safe food productionThis was followed by technical sessions covering the sources, classification, and harmful effects of cadmium on soil quality, plant growth, and human health.

Practical laboratory sessions involved the analysis of soil and water samples collected from different locations. Students were trained in reagent preparation and standard analytical procedures for cadmium estimation using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS).

Towards the conclusion of the workshop, participants analysed the generated data and discussed their findings, highlighting the relevance of cadmium monitoring in agriculture. A short quiz was also conducted to assess learning outcomes. The workshop concluded with a valedictory session addressed by Prof. (Dr.) Rajendra Prasad, Head of the Department, School of Agriculture, who appreciated the students’ active participation and commitment throughout the programme.
