The Department of Biotechnology (Zoology), School of Applied and Life Sciences, organized an educational tour to Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, Dalhousie, from 20 to 22 November 2025. The primary objective of this visit was to provide students with firsthand exposure to Himalayan biodiversity, forest ecology, and wildlife conservation practices.
During the tour, students explored the dense temperate forests of Kalatop, known for their rich flora and fauna. They observed important plant species such as deodar, oak, and rhododendron, and learned about their ecological significance. With guidance from faculty members and forest officials and personnel, they identified various birds, insects, and signs of mammals, gaining practical insights into field-based wildlife studies. The serene environment offered opportunities to understand concepts like habitat diversity, food chains, and ecological balance in the natural environment.
The visit also included informative interactions with forest personnel, who explained the challenges faced by protected areas, including climate change, habitat disturbance, and increasing tourism pressure. The students documented their observations, prepared field notes, and discussed the importance of sustainable conservation strategies for maintaining Himalayan ecosystems.
The tour proved to be both academically enriching and personally inspiring. It strengthened participants’ understanding of biodiversity conservation and deepened their connection with nature. Overall, the educational visit to Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary successfully enhanced experiential learning and promoted environmental awareness among the participants.
