The Department of Civil Engineering, Uttaranchal Institute of Technology, organized an industrial visit to the Water Treatment Plant at Dilaram Chowk, Dehradun, on 21st November 2025 for students of the fifth and seventh semesters. The visit was coordinated by Mr. Ashish Pathani and Dr. Samrity Jalota, Assistant Professors in the Department of Civil Engineering. The objective of the visit was to provide students with practical exposure to real-world water treatment processes managed by Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan (UJS).
During the visit, Mr. Prabhakar Kumar, Junior Engineer at UJS, guided the students and shared detailed insights into the functioning of various units in the treatment system. He began by explaining the aeration fountain, where raw water is exposed to air to remove dissolved gases and enhance oxygen content. The group then observed the sedimentation tank, where suspended particles settle under the influence of gravity.
Mr. Prabhakar further elaborated on the flocculation unit, where specific chemicals are added to form flocs that help remove finer impurities. The tour continued to the settling tank, which aids in further separation of suspended matter. The students also explored the rapid sand filter, a crucial purification unit that removes fine particles through layers of graded sand.
The visit proceeded to the concrete water reservoir used for temporary storage of treated water, followed by the overhead tank, which supplies purified water to nearby areas after disinfection.
