The Uttaranchal College of Health Sciences, Uttaranchal University, celebrated World Physiotherapy Day on September 8, 2025, on the theme “Role of Physical Exercise in Healthy Ageing” by organizing a community awareness initiative at Prem Dham Old-age Home, Dehradun. The event was carried out under the able guidance of the respected Director, UCHS, who motivated the students and faculty by emphasizing the importance of extending physiotherapy services beyond the classroom to positively impact society. Faculty members Nidhi Sharma, Rohit Ranjan, and Kejang Lamu Khochee accompanied the Bachelor of Physiotherapy students from the IIIrd, Vth, and VIIth semesters, ensuring the smooth execution of the event.
The program began with an interactive session highlighting the role of exercise in maintaining mobility, independence, and quality of life among the elderly. Students, divided into groups, demonstrated exercises under different domains, including posture correction, back care, mobility, strength training, and balance and coordination, encouraging residents to practice along. Special attention was given to the sick and less mobile residents, as students visited individual wards and rooms to demonstrate personalized exercises suitable to their condition. Exercise prescription leaflets were distributed to ensure continuity of practice.
In addition, students voluntarily raised funds and donated food items and essential supplies, adding a humanitarian dimension. The residents expressed gratitude, while the students enhanced their skills in patient interaction, clinical application, and community engagement, making the event a valuable integration of academic learning, professional development, and social responsibility.
