Students from the Departments of Data Science, Mathematics, and Microbiology at the School of Applied and Life Sciences (SALS), Uttaranchal University, Dehradun, visited the National Survey Museum, G & RB, Survey of India, on 19 August 2025. The purpose of this educational trip was to provide students with practical exposure to the history, techniques, and advancements in the field of surveying and mapping in India.

Upon arrival, the students were warmly welcomed by the officials of the Survey of India. The visit commenced with an informative session highlighting the rich legacy of the Survey of India, established in 1767, which has played a crucial role in the cartographic and geospatial development of the nation. The museum showcased rare instruments such as early theodolites, chains, compasses, plane tables, as well as modern digital surveying equipment. Students were particularly fascinated to observe the Great Trigonometrical Survey instruments used in the 19th century for measuring the Indian subcontinent, including those associated with the measurement of Mount Everest.

Interactive displays and historical maps offered valuable insights into the evolution of map-making, from hand-drawn sketches to satellite imagery and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The guides further explained how technological advancements such as remote sensing, GPS, and digital cartography have revolutionised modern surveying practices.

The visit concluded with a group photograph and a vote of thanks to the Survey of India authorities for their hospitality and enriching guidance. The trip was accompanied by two faculty members, Mrs Shivangi Baghel and Mr Rahul Gaur, who guided and supported the students throughout the visit.
