Law College Dehradun extends hands on training experience through the jail visit organised on 10 May 2025 under the aegis of the Legal Aid Centre and Pro Bono Club to the District Jail, Suddhowala, Dehradun. The event was initiated in the presence of the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dean, Law College Dehradun, Nodal Officer, Pro Bono Club, Prof (Dr) Rajesh Bahuguna, Principal, Law College Dehradun, Presiding Officer, Pro Bono Club, Prof (Dr) Poonam Rawat, and Dr Abhiranjan Dixit, Faculty-in-Charge, Pro Bono Club.
The students on arrival at the district jail were given an overview of the facilities and engaged in conversation with Mr Vivek Shukla, the prison's deputy jailer. The Deputy Jailor then led the team to the Juvenile Barrack, where inmates aged between 18 and 21 years are housed, including both convicted individuals and undertrials. To support their general growth, juveniles are given access to a library, free schooling, and a structured physical training program. All inmates have access to recreational and entertainment amenities and a hospital with 19 beds. A separate quarantine barrack is maintained where new inmates are kept under observation for about seven days. The members then went to the jail's kitchen and bakery, where a range of meals could be purchased utilizing a prepaid card system.
The Legal Aid Centre of the jail is also visited by advocates from the District Legal Services Authority (DALSA) and Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs), who assist inmates with affidavits, bail procedures, legal awareness, and appeals to higher authorities. The team was then taken to the jail factory, which provides employment and skill-building opportunities to prisoners, women's barracks, and the exhibition space, where prisoners'-made furniture is on display and for sale, including chairs, laptop tables, and dining tables.
