Department of Civil Engineering, UIT organised an Outreach Programme on Smart Solutions for Solid Waste Management

The Nirmaan Club, Department of Civil Engineering, Uttaranchal Institute of Technology, Uttaranchal University, successfully conducted its much-anticipated outreach program, “Smart Solutions for Solid Waste Management,” on 16 November 2024 at Rajkiya Ucchtar Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Kotra, Santour, Dehradun Village adopted under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA). 

Students from Classes 9 and 10 actively participated in the interactive sessions, which featured modules on waste segregation, the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), and the environmental impact of improper waste disposal. The event’s highlight was the keynote address by Mr. Ashish Pathani, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, who inspired students to adopt simple yet impactful waste management habits. “Youth can be powerful catalysts for change,” he remarked, urging students to spread awareness in their communities. 

Talking about the initiative, Mr Gaurav Thakur, Head, Civil Engineering Department emphasized the importance of instilling environmental consciousness at a young age. “It is crucial to nurture responsible habits among children to build a sustainable future. We are delighted with the response and hope these students will carry the message to their families and communities,” he said. 

Prof Dr Sumit Chaudhary, Director, UIT commended the efforts of the Nirmaan Club in fostering environmental consciousness. The principal of the host school, Mr Gyanendra Kumar, expressed his gratitude, stating, “This initiative has left a lasting impression on our students, equipping them with knowledge to lead eco-friendly lives.” 

Students expressed their gratitude, with many pledging to implement waste management practices at home. Teachers from the host school applauded the effort, calling it a transformative experience for their students. 

This event reinforces the institute's commitment to community engagement and environmental education, paving the way for more such initiatives in the future. The Civil Engineering Department expressed its intent to organize similar awareness programs to spread sustainable practices across the region.
