The Women Cell, Uttaranchal University under the aegis of Women Cell, SLA, Uttaranchal University organized university level Debate Competition on 5 March 2024 to celebrate International Women’s Day. The event aimed to bring awareness on stereotypes about women propagated by media and to develop educational spaces for critical reflection on women related issues, advocating for gender equality.
The competition was organised team wise, in which two members on in for and one against constituted one team. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from the students from various colleges within Uttaranchal University. The competition encouraged participants to explore and develop their critical thinking skills to challenge the stereotypes about women in media.
The event was marked by creative and critical thinking, as students showcased their exemplary oratory skills. The content of the student’s debate was not only appealing but carried powerful messages about the significance of challenging gender stereotypes perpetuated by media in cinemas, print magazines and social media. The event was successful in creating an environment of intellectual discussion and instilling thought-provoking ideas among the audience.
The competition was judged by Mr Shubham Joshi and Mr Ashutosh Sharma, Assistant Professors, SLA, based on artistic merit, relevance to the theme, and the impact of the message. The winners were:
• Against the motion: Abhinav Bansal, Law College
• For the motion: Shreya Pant, Uttaranchal Institute of Technology
Debate Competition on International Women’s Day organized by the Women Cell, SLA at Uttaranchal University was a commendable initiative that promoted critical thinking, awareness, and dialogue on the importance of challenging stereotypes about women.
The event was duly coordinated by Women Cell members of SLA.
