As per the call of the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India and the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand for the "Ek Vriksh Maa Ke Naam" initiative, Uttaranchal University, Dehradun, celebrated the state festival of Uttarakhand, "Harela," by contributing to the national tree plantation campaign. On 16 July 2024, the UU- Unnat Bharat Abhiyan team of Uttaranchal University, with the help of local villagers, organized a plantation drive in five villages within the Sahaspur block i.e., Kotra Santaur, Kolhupani, Hariyawala Kalan, Majhaun, and Chauki, which have been adopted by the university.
During this plantation drive, more than 100 plants of medicinal and ritual significance were planted in the villages. Dr Rajendra Prasad, Coordinator of UU-Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, explained local villager about the critical role of trees that play significant role in mitigating climate change and global warming. He also highlighted the medicinal importance of these trees.
The Gram Pradhans, including Smt Anju Tomar, Gram Pradhan of Kotra Santaur and Kolhupani, Smt Rajni Devi, Gram Pradhan of Hariyawala Kalan, Smt Mehroon Nisha, Gram Pradhan of Majhaun and Smt Suman, Gram Pradhan of Chauki along with social activists Shri Surendra Singh Tomar, Shri Manjit Singh Negi, Shri Manmohanlal Sharma, Shri Muhammad Rashid, and Shri Vivek Kumar, actively contributed to this plantation drive. The students of UIPS, Himanko Gogoi and Hriday Kumar Biswas also participated in this plantation drive.
