Law College Dehradun organized a Door-to-Door legal camp in a slum of Sunderban, Bhauwala, Dehradun on 11th January 2023 under the aegis of Legal Aid Centre. The event was initiated in the presence of Dean, Law College Dehradun, and Director of Legal Aid Centre, Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna. HOD, Law College Dehradun and Dy. Director of Legal Aid Centre, Prof. Dr. Poonam Rawat, and Chairperson of Legal Aid Centre, Mr. Abhiranjan Dixit.


The camp aimed at finding out the real issues of the slum by working at the ground level and investigating the real-life conditions in which the people are living. The slum is populated with migrant workers from Bihar including the districts of Bhagalpur and Samastipur. The slum comprised 20 bamboo huts with around 100 people. The main occupation of these people is labor.


Mr. Sudeep Chandra, senior core committee member explained the people, on the objective of the camp and talked about the issues on which the Legal Aid Centre made under the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India can provide free legal services. Mr. Nehal Ray, and Mr. Neeraj Kumar Vats, tried to make the people comfortable enough to talk about their issues.


The issues that were put forward by the people were that they have been living in the particular area for 30 years, but they have not been provided with efficient government services. One of the people, Mr. Yogendra Jha informed, the Legal Aid Centre, about a fire that occurred 6 months back which left them destitute. All their essentials including their Aadhar card were burnt. Another issue is of supply of water and lack of toilets due to which the women and children have to go in open areas. Electricity was another issue in the village. Though the Anganwadi and the mid-day meal scheme in the school are present but are not properly in effect.


Legal Aid Centre gave the mobile number maintained under the Tele Law scheme and asked the people to call them there and then when they feel that their rights have been violated so that an adequate step can be taken.
