Uttaranchal University marked Earth Day with a Sustainable Seed Collecting workshop to support Alpine Flora's conservation in Uttarakhand on 22 - 23 April 2024. In collaboration with Massey University and New Zealand Seed Bank, the workshop aimed to preserve biodiversity for future generations. Approximately 60-80 attendees from Uttaranchal University, along with participants from CCSHAU and Dr. Y.S Parmar University Himachal Pradesh, totaling around 100. Dr. Craig McGill, Seed Science and Technology Research Officer, Massey University, Dr. Georgina Homs Aubia - Expert in Plant Science, Massey University, Mr Mesu Tora, Representative from New Zealand Seed Bank, Dr Anurag Malik-Division of Research and Innovation, Uttaranchal University were the key speakers of the workshops.
On Day 1, Dr. Craig McGill discussed "Seed Banking as a Conservation Strategy" with a focus on seed collection methods while on Day 2, Dr. Georgina Homs Aubia, Mr. Mesu Tora, and Dr. Anurag Malik covered topics including "Collecting Seed, Vouchers and Data", "Post-harvest Handling", and "Consultation and Safety in the Field".
The workshop served as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration towards sustainable seed collecting practices, contributing to the conservation of Uttarakhand's alpine flora.
