The School of Liberal Arts at Uttaranchal University, in partnership with the English Language Teachers’ Association of India (ELTAI), orchestrated the 17th International and 53rd Annual Conference themed "English for Global Citizenship: Multiple Teaching Acts and Learning Experiences." This four-day extravaganza (11/10/2023 – 14/10/2023) became a melting pot of insights and ideas, drawing educators, researchers, and language enthusiasts worldwide. The conference was embedded with five plenary sessions, panel discussions, symposium, Roundtable Discussion and multiple workshops.    


The event commenced with a traditional floral welcome by Shri Jitender Joshi, the Chancellor of Uttaranchal University, marking the inauguration. Renowned author Mr. Akshat Gupta, the chief guest, received a warm welcome from the Chancellor, followed by ceremonial lamp lighting by esteemed dignitaries. Dr. Sanjay Arora, President of ELTAI, delivered a welcoming address, while Dr. Shravan Kumar, Vice-President of ELTAI, delineated the conference’s objectives. Dr. K Elango, National Secretary of ELTAI, emphasized ELTAI's commitment to fostering excellence in English language education. Speakers such as Mr. Micah Risher from RELO and Mr. Vivek Thapa from Cambridge University Press and Assessment enriched the discussions. Prof. (Dr.) Dharam Buddhi, Vice-Chancellor of Uttaranchal University, inspired and encouraged the audience as the conference progressed. The conference unveiled the Journal of English Language Teaching (JELT) and the conference proceedings, serving as repositories of collective wisdom and scholarly contributions, fostering idea exchange. 


Each day was replete with intellectual vigor. With more than 300 speakers, day 1 showcased 60 paper presentations, followed by 77 on Day 2, 95 on Day 3, and 80 on Day 4. The sessions spanned diverse topics such as student-centered learning, the impact of technology on education, and the coexistence of English and indigenous languages. Engaging plenary sessions explored themes like the Himalayan culture's interface with English and the evolving nature of Indian English.  


Noteworthy moments included the discussion on AI's impact on natural intelligence and an interview spotlighting the Karadi Path Pedagogy's relevance in education. The conference culminated with the launch of “India Reads,” a transformative initiative advocating lifelong learning in English language education. The Valedictory ceremony, with its special recognitions and announcement of ELTAI Conference 2024, brought closure with the National Anthem and certificate distribution. The conference was hosted by SLA under the able leadership of Dr Shravan Kumar, Dean, SLA.
