A Panel Discussion on “The Unnerved Himalayas- In the Grip of Disaster”

Law College Dehradun, Uttaranchal University organised a panel discussion on Himalayan Day on 9 September 2023 under the aegis of Vasundhara – The Green Society, on the theme, "The Unnerved Himalayas – In the Grip of Disasters," The event intended to shed light on the environmental challenges faced by the Himalayan region and the urgent need for conservation and protection. The panel members were Ms Vimala Bahuguna, Sarvodya Worker, Advocate Raj Panjwani, Supreme Court of India and Advocate Deepshikha Bharti Designated Senior Advocate. 


Smt Vimala Bahuguna, in her address emphasized the paramount importance of environmental protection. She recounted the historical significance of the Chipko movement, showcasing its profound philosophy rooted in the reverence for nature and the need for a sustainable approach to development. Her speech left a lasting impression, serving as a poignant reminder of our collective responsibility to preserve the Himalayan region and its pristine beauty for generations to come.  


Advocate Raj Panjwani stressed upon the adverse impact of human activities on the Himalayas, including the construction of roads and dams and discussed the precautionary principle and the right to a pollution-free environment as fundamental rights. Advocate Deepshikha Bharti highlighted the rampant deforestation in the Himalayan region for infrastructure projects, raising concerns about environmental degradation. She also mentioned the recent Forest Conservation (Amendment) Bill and its potential impact on biodiversity  


The panel discussion brought together experts and students to address critical environmental challenges faced by the Himalayan region. The insights shared by the panelists and the thought-provoking questions raised by the students serve as a reminder of the urgent need for sustainable practices and conservation efforts in this ecologically fragile region. The event was moderated by the Chairperson Dr Lakshmi Priya and the Vote of thanks was proposed by Lakshay Verma, President of Vasundhara- The Green Society.
