The two-day workshop on “Skill Development in Experimental Pharmacology: Ethical Approaches to Animal Handling (SDEP-2025)” was organized by the Uttaranchal Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), under the aegis of Uttaranchal University, in collaboration with the Association of Pharmaceutical Teachers of India (APTI) and the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), Uttarakhand State Branch. The event brought together eminent speakers, faculty members, and students to deliberate on the ethical and technical aspects of experimental pharmacology.

Day one began with an inaugural ceremony featuring traditional lamp lighting and a welcome address by Prof. (Dr.) Vikash Jakhmola, Director, UIPS. He emphasized the significance of ethical practices and skill-oriented learning in pharmacological research. The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor graced the occasion and lauded the institute’s initiative in organizing such a meaningful event.

The technical sessions commenced with an informative lecture by Prof. (Dr.) Bikash Medhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, who discussed current trends and innovations in pharmacological research. Prof. (Dr.) Mandeep Arora from DIT University presented an engaging talk on “Recent Advancements in Alternatives to Animals in Biomedical Research,” highlighting ethical and modern experimental models. Prof. (Dr.) Shradha Bisht, UIPS, concluded the lecture series with an insightful presentation on “Sample Size Justification in Experimental Pharmacology: Balancing Science and Ethics.”

Following the lectures, faculty members conducted demonstrations on key experimental techniques, including gel electrophoresis, animal handling (as per CCSEA guidelines), and behavioral models such as the elevated plus maze and Morris water maze. This was followed by a scientific discussion session encouraging participant interaction and idea exchange.

Day two focused on hands-on training sessions, providing participants with guided practical exposure to laboratory practices and ethical handling procedures. During the feedback session, attendees appreciated the workshop’s structured design and the opportunity for experiential learning. The workshop concluded with expressions of gratitude to all collaborators and participants. Overall, SDEP-2025 effectively fulfilled its objective of promoting ethical awareness and technical proficiency in experimental pharmacology, fostering a culture of responsible research and scientific curiosity among aspiring researchers.
