The School of Agriculture (SOA), Uttaranchal University, organized a workshop on "Project Relearn: Cultivating Compassionate Agriculturists." The workshop aimed to raise awareness among agriculture students about the importance of farm animals, the need for animal laws, farmers’ legal responsibilities, animal welfare standards recommended by ICAR, common welfare issues, environmental and food safety regulations, transportation laws, and enforcement mechanisms.
The event started with a welcome note by Prof (Dr) Sharad Pandey, Director, SOA who emphasized ethical animal care and the Five Freedoms of Animals—freedom from hunger, discomfort, pain, fear, and the ability to express normal behavior.
The session was led by Ms Aanchal Raturi, SOA alumna, Animal Advocate, and Project Lead, who provided valuable insights into key animal protection laws, including the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, Indian Penal Code, 1860, and state laws like the Cow Progeny Act (UK/UP). She highlighted the issues like overcrowding, lack of veterinary care, and unethical farming practices, urging legal intervention when necessary.
On February 22, students visited Krishna Dham Gaushala (Doon Animal Welfare), Hasanpur, managed by Mr. Amit Pal and his team. The structured care system of this Gaushala for over 2,000 animals deeply inspired students.
The event was coordinated by Dr Gaurav Jain, Dr Sandeep Kumar, Mr Jayanti Ballabh, and Ms Mansi Nautiyal, and ended with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr Rajendra Prasad, HoD, SOA.
