Pro Bono Club of Law College Dehradun conducted a legal awareness camp on the Auspicious Occasion of its 2nd Foundation Day in Manduwala Village Dehradun, on 30 September 2024. The primary objective of this camp was to address the legal concerns of the local community, educate individuals about their legal rights and foster awareness on various legal issues. The day began with a legal awareness camp organized in the village of Manduwala, for the local population, comprising mostly of daily wage workers and farmers. The camp was well-received, and several critical issues were brought to light during these interactions, including, Scarcity of Clean Water, Ration Card Issues and Lack of School Infrastructure. Following this, the club members visited Rajkiya Prathmik Vidhyalaya, a government primary school located in Navgaon, Sahaspur. The team introduced the young minds to the fundamental rights and concept of pro bono, emphasizing the importance of legal aid in society.
The term ‘pro bono’ was explained by Ms. Pakhi Kansal as legal services provided for free or at a reduced cost to those who cannot afford them. This term might seem complex to young minds but was made accessible through simpler explanation.
In addition to the legal education session, Ms. Kanan Joshi distributed pamphlets containing pro bono helpline numbers and police helpline numbers to the children and explained mainly about their rights. This initiative aimed at instilling awareness from an early age about seeking help when needed and knowing where to go in times of legal difficulties. The event was held in the esteemed presence of Pro Vice-Chancellor, Uttaranchal University, Dean, Law College Dehradun, and Nodal Officer, Pro Bono Club, Principal & Presiding Officer, Prof (Dr) Poonam Rawat and Faculty-in-Charge, Dr Abhiranjan Dixit.
