April 22 every year is observed as World Earth Day to mark the importance of our planet and to support, protect and preserve the environment. It was first celebrated about 50 years ago, when a United Nations senator from Wisconsin organized a national demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues. The term “Climate Change” has become so common in day to day life that it is heard about every now and then but there is hardly anything that is done about it. Climate Change has successfully confined itself to books and syllabi but faces enormous negligence when it comes to real lives. It was to change this very approach that World Earth Day came into existence with the objective to raise awareness and encouragement to take steps to preserve the environment.
Zenith - The Literary Club, SLA organized an event on 27th April 2023 to commemorate World Earth Day with the sole motive to highlight the importance of our environment in the heart of each and every attendee of the event. The occasion was embraced by the presence of the Dean of School of Liberal Arts Prof. (Dr.) Shravan Kumar, HoD Dr. Reeta Rautela and many other faculty members of SLA. The event began with Priya Juyal (BA (H) Psychology) introducing the audience with a brief description of the day and its importance. Then, a documentary film named “Seaspiracy” was presented before the audience. Meanwhile, slips were also distributed among the audience so that feedback on the documentary can be provided. With the help of the Club Coordinator Ms Shikha Bharti, a face painting event also took place side by side in which many participants took part in showcasing their love towards the planet and environment.
Following the documentary, Deepesh Garg from BA (H.) English, Semester IV presented a summary of the documentary film along with a plea to take some individual-level steps to preserve the environment. The program came to a close with the vote of thanks proposed by Smriti Gulati from BA (H.) English, Semester IV. The face-painting participants looked so mesmerized that a photo session also took place as the final icing on the cake.
