The School of Agriculture (SOA) organized a Skill Development Programme on "Techniques of Identification and Management of Weeds" on 5th December 2022 for agriculture students. The primary objective of the session was to develop the students' skills in identifying and actively managing weeds in field crops. The program commenced with an insightful demonstration by Ms. Mansi Nautiyal, Assistant Professor at SOA, who highlighted the detrimental impact of common weeds on the yield of Rabi crops. The students were encouraged to actively participate in the collection of weed samples from crop fields in Nakatpura, a village adopted by Uttaranchal University. Furthermore, the session explored into an in-depth understanding of various aspects, including the identification of different weed types, their physiological impact on crop growth and yield reduction, and the principles of Integrated Weed Management (IWM).
Participation of students in such activity played a key role for taking appropriate decision for selection of mechanical or chemical methods of weed management in the field. The skills they devolved during this program will empower them to address weed-related challenges in their future agricultural endeavours.
