18 students pursuing Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology at Uttaranchal College of Health Sciences attended a workshop titled Stem Cell Banking: A Lifeline for Tomorrow at SBS University on 17 October 2024. This impactful event explored the scientific, ethical, and regulatory aspects of stem cell preservation. Dr Ashwani Bhardwaj, Head of the Department of Medical Laboratory Technology at Kalpana Chawla Government Polytechnic for Women in Ambala, Haryana, delivered a keynote address.
Students received valuable insights into stem cell banking, focusing on the essential processes of collecting, processing, and storing stem cells for future therapeutic applications. The speaker discussed the wide-ranging benefits of stem cell banking, from treating blood disorders to advancing personalized medicine, and emphasized the legal and ethical considerations, along with the oversight responsibilities of regulatory bodies in the field. During the workshop, students learned about the procedures involved in obtaining stem cell samples and participated in hands-on training with stem cell samples, particularly those derived from umbilical cord blood. The importance of early preservation in stem cell banking was strongly underscored throughout the event.
In conclusion, the workshop offered a valuable learning experience, equipping students with hands-on skills and insights into stem cell banking. The visit was coordinated by Mr Gaurav Mittal under the guidance of Dr Kartikey, Joint Registrar and Director, UCHS.
