Law College Dehradun of Uttaranchal University organized a highly important and knowledge sharing international webinar on the topic ‘‘Administration Then and Administration Now: The Changing Role of Police Administration In India’’ On 16th November 2022 with the keynote speaker Dr. Kiran Bedi, Retd. IPS and former Lt. Governor of Puducherry ,who is a well-known international figure. She is the first woman in India to join the officer rank of the Indian Police Service in 1972 and was the 24th lieutenant governor of Puducherry from 2016 to 2021.She remained in service for 35 years before taking voluntary retirement in 2007 as director general bureau of Police Research and Development.She also worked with the United Nations in New York as the Police Advisor to the Secretary General and in the Department of Peacekeeping Operation.She has represented India in International forums on crime prevention,women issues, and drug abuse.She is the author of several books; her latest is "Fearless Governance."
The objective of the webinar was to provide detailed knowledge to the participants on how with time administration has evolved.The enlightening session began with the welcome address delivered by Ms. Aarju, Convenor of Competition Cell,Dr. Kiran Bedi was greeted by Dr. Poonam Rawat, HOD of Law College, Dehradun. The webinar started with her condolence and a 2-minute silence for the saddest demise of the wife of Dr. Rajesh Bahuguna, Dean of Law College Dehradun. She started the webinar on a very positive note, telling all the participants about the different changes in the police administration at the time of her tenure and at present. Dr. Kiran Bedi began her presentation by shedding some light on the subject, displaying data on the state of manpower, technology, units, training, and women between January 1986 and January 2021 as we can see there is a big change in the number of sanctions strength. She also mentioned about the strength of CAPFs which has also increased to 11,09,969 from 3,31,989.Following it, she stated about the training which is dependent on the budget which is provided by the government to the states. She explained about the enormous growth of women in police administration. She gave the data of 1986 as compared to 2021 that the large number of women have taken part in the administration. The substantial change that she mentioned was the increase of actual strength of women entries in the police administration.According to the 2021 report, more than 2 lakh women currently work in police administration in states and union territories. She laid light on the gender related issues that have decreased in the last three decades.Also, she highlighted the new emerging challenges like financial crime, cybercrimes, and cyber security and the growing importance of Information technology. The presentation was conveyed in a very simple language which was easily fathomable by the students. The later half of the event had the keynote taking up doubts and queries of the participants which was venerated by Dr. Kiran Bedi. The event was a great success and was attended by a wide diversity of participants including students, academicians and professionals from all over India. The enlightening session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by The Chairperson Asst. Prof. Sachin Kumar on behalf of the competition cell organizing team.
