A five-day workshop on “Lead Contamination in Soil and Water: Environmental Risks and Crop Safety” commenced at the School of Agriculture (SOA), Uttaranchal University, Dehradun. The workshop aims to raise awareness among students and researchers about heavy metal contamination in soil and water caused by industrial emissions and the excessive use of chemicals in agriculture.
The inaugural session began with a welcome address by Prof. (Dr.) Sharad Pandey, Director, SOA, who highlighted the possible sources of lead such as pencils, firecrackers, and industrial waste, and discussed their impact on crop and human health. Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Singh, Director, Research and Innovation, delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of utilizing modern tools and techniques in research. Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna, Pro Vice-Chancellor, shared his words of wisdom, stating that India, being an agriculture-based nation, must prioritize soil and water conservation. This was followed by the inaugural address by Prof. (Dr.) Dharam Buddhi, Vice-Chancellor, who emphasized integrating traditional knowledge with modern technology for sustainable development.
The session concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Atin Kumar. A large number of participants, along with faculty members, attended and actively engaged in the workshop.
